Timothy Dumlao, a 2 BS Biology AASA Scholar, was recently hailed as the Essay Writing Champion of the National Inter-Collegiate Genetics Quiz Contest (NICQC) held at the University of the Philippines – Los Baños from November 25-29.
The competition centered around the role of genetics in advancing modern biotechnology. It gathered undergraduate students nationwide to test their knowledge regarding genetics and biotechnology through different contests.
“Before the awarding ceremony, to be honest, I was feeling a little down and overwhelmed with my academic tasks…competing as a second-year student against fourth-year students was like a “David and Goliath” moment for me, as Sir Rondolo, my coach, even told me,” Timothy said.
With only less than two weeks to prepare, he dedicated two to three hours each day until the contest to study, read journals, and practice his vocabulary. He noted how it was hard to juggle preparation with his finals so he thanks his coaches for their unwavering support.
“My days and nights of practice actually paid off when I heard my name and Ateneo’s name announced during the ceremony,” Timothy added.
He highlights how being a scholar drove his passion to exemplify Atenean values and intellect on a national stage. He also extends his gratitude to AASA for the assistance he continuously receives.
“The experience with my co-participants and coaches enlightened me to a new door of opportunities, and I hope others can also have the same joyful experience as I did during the NIGQC,” he said.
